Quiet Opulence
In her latest Autumn/Winter 2026–2027 collection, “The Orientalism” by Indonesian modestwear designer Poppy Theodorin reflects on heritage, perception, and contemporary femininity through fluid silhouettes and refined craftsmanship imbued with quiet elegance.

Inspired by Edward Said’s seminal text Orientalism, the collection explores how the Middle East and Asia have long been perceived through the Western imagination — often romanticized through notions of mystery, beauty, and opulence. Rather than approaching the subject purely as critique, Poppy transforms those impressions into a poetic visual narrative, weaving together influences from the Arabian Peninsula, North Africa, India, China, and Indonesia.

That richness unfolds through a muted autumnal palette of deep ochres, warm ambers, dusty blush tones, and shadowed neutrals reminiscent of Orientalist paintings by Eugène Delacroix and Ottoman artist Osman Hamdi Bey. Across 18 looks, abayas, kaftans, dresses, and tailored outerwear are elevated through botanical appliqué, crystals, sequins, lace detailing, and delicate patchwork embellishments that feel graceful rather than excessive.

Several silhouettes subtly reinterpret cultural dress codes through cheongsam collars, qipao-inspired closures, drop-waist constructions, and sculptural layering, creating a dialogue between heritage and contemporary femininity. One of the collection’s most striking elements appears through sculptural face coverings inspired by traditional Bedouin veils, rendered with lace, embroidery, and metallic textures that add both depth and symbolism to the presentation.

There is also a noticeable sense of maturity throughout “The Orientalism”. While Poppy Theodorin has long been recognised for romantic silhouettes and ornate detailing, this season feels more restrained and introspective. Opulence is expressed with intention — never overpowering the wearer, but instead enhancing the quiet strength and dignity that define the collection. Founded in 2014, the Indonesian label has become known for its feminine modestwear sensibility shaped through intricate embellishment and refined craftsmanship.

With “The Orientalism”, Poppy Theodorin presents modestwear not merely as fashion, but as an emotional expression shaped by memory, culture, and modern womanhood.
