Italy: The New Domestic Landscape Becomes Reality

Joe Colombo’s futuristic vision of domestic living finds a new expression more than half a century later. At Salone Internazionale del Bagno 2026, Italian tapware brand Mamoli introduces a collection that translates the designer’s experimental concepts into contemporary bathroom fittings designed for modern interiors.

The project continues Mamoli’s exploration of design culture through its Maestri series, dedicated to some of the most influential figures in Italian design. Following tributes to Gio Ponti, Alessandro Mendini, and Achille Castiglioni, the series now turns to Joe Colombo, a visionary designer known for reimagining the future of domestic living through sculptural and modular design thinking.

Colombo’s radical ideas about living environments were famously expressed through projects such as Visiona 1, created for Bayer and presented at Interzum in Cologne in 1969, and the Total Furnishing Unit, developed for the exhibition Italy: The New Domestic Landscape at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1972. Both projects proposed an innovative approach to domestic space, where architecture, furniture, and everyday objects were integrated into multifunctional systems designed for modern life.

Within these futuristic environments, the tap was conceived not merely as a technical element but as part of a broader design language. It became an integral component of the living unit, reflecting Colombo’s belief that everyday objects could function as “machines for living” within a flexible and modular domestic landscape.

Through Mamoli’s reinterpretation, the taps originally imagined within these visionary interiors are translated into contemporary products. The project acts as a faithful design translation, transforming conceptual ideas from the late 1960s and early 1970s into functional objects suited to today’s lifestyle and interiors.

At the centre of the collection is a three-hole tap with a high spout, characterised by soft and continuous lines that reflect Colombo’s distinctive design language. Seamless surfaces create a fluid and sculptural form, while polished finishes enhance the reflective character of the piece. Saturated colour accents run throughout the collection as a distinctive signature, highlighting its geometry and adding a vibrant visual dimension to the design.

With this collection, Mamoli brings Joe Colombo’s forward-thinking imagination into the present, reaffirming the brand’s commitment to celebrating the legacy of Italian design masters. By translating iconic design visions into contemporary bathroom fittings, the project bridges design history and modern living while reinforcing Mamoli’s distinctive path within the tapware sector.

Mamoli will present the Joe Colombo collection in preview during a dedicated press event on 25 March at the Materia 2.0 showroom in Milan.
