ARTJOG closes Generatio and steps into its next chapter, LEGATUM

On 30 August 2026, Jogja National Museum fell quiet on the final night of ARTJOG 2026 ARS LONGA: GENERATIO, concluding an edition that positioned contemporary art not merely as something to be exhibited, but as something to be experienced, questioned and collectively negotiated.

At 19, ARTJOG has grown beyond the format of an annual art exhibition. Its significance lies increasingly in its ability to bring artists, creative practitioners and the public into a shared space of ideas—making contemporary art more accessible while nurturing dialogue across generations.

Curated by Farah Wardani, Generatio marked the first chapter of the three-year curatorial framework ARS LONGA Trilogia, exploring the relevance of art amid social, political and ecological change. The journey continues with Legatum in 2027 and Mundus in 2028.

For Wardani, ARTJOG has embodied the idea of seni peristiwa—not simply an event celebrating art, but an artistic event capable of generating a new collective consciousness. The works presented this year resonated with the realities beyond the exhibition walls, encouraging audiences to reconsider the role and relevance of contemporary art within society.

The closing itself extended that spirit of collective reflection. Alongside the curator and participating artists, ARTJOG’s supporting staff—those who worked on the frontline throughout more than two months of the festival—also shared their aspirations, reinforcing the importance of openness and a safe, inclusive environment within the art ecosystem.

ARTJOG Director Heri Pemad reaffirmed the festival’s responsibility to provide a representative space for artistic thought while sustaining the people who make the ecosystem possible. “Without the trust of artists and the care of the public, ARTJOG would lose its meaning,” he stated.

The evening ended on a warmer, celebratory note, with performances by White Shoes and The Couples Company followed by electronic act Les Garçons Aux Chaussures Blanches, transforming the closing from a farewell into a collective celebration.

Yet the end of Generatio is also a beginning. Approaching its 20th anniversary in 2027, ARTJOG is entering the next chapter of its institutional journey with a commitment to becoming more mature, inclusive, critical and supportive of its ecosystem. The forthcoming Legatum will turn its attention to inheritance—from artistic and cultural values to historical narratives—and what these legacies might mean for generations to come.

After 19 years, ARTJOG’s achievement is no longer measured only by the artworks it presents, but by the conversations it continues to generate. ARS LONGA: GENERATIO closes with a simple but consequential proposition: art endures not only through what it leaves behind, but through the consciousness it leaves with us.

Pada 30 Agustus 2026, Jogja National Museum menjadi saksi penutupan ARTJOG 2026 ARS LONGA: GENERATIO—sebuah edisi yang menempatkan seni kontemporer bukan sekadar untuk dipamerkan, melainkan untuk dialami, dipertanyakan, dan dimaknai bersama.

Memasuki usia ke-19, ARTJOG telah berkembang jauh melampaui format pameran seni tahunan. Signifikansinya kini terletak pada kemampuannya mempertemukan seniman, pekerja kreatif, dan publik dalam satu ruang pertukaran gagasan, sekaligus memperluas akses terhadap seni kontemporer dan membuka dialog lintas generasi.

Dikuratori Farah Wardani, Generatio menjadi babak pertama dari kerangka kuratorial tiga tahun ARS LONGA Trilogia, yang membaca kembali relevansi seni di tengah perubahan sosial, politik, dan ekologi. Perjalanan ini akan berlanjut melalui Legatum pada 2027 dan Mundus pada 2028.

Bagi Farah Wardani, ARTJOG telah mewujud sebagai seni peristiwa—bukan sekadar peristiwa untuk merayakan seni, melainkan sebuah peristiwa artistik yang mampu membentuk kesadaran kolektif baru. Karya-karya yang hadir dalam Generatio beresonansi dengan realitas di luar ruang pamer, mengajak publik untuk kembali mempertanyakan peran dan relevansi seni kontemporer dalam kehidupan masyarakat.

Semangat refleksi kolektif tersebut juga terasa dalam seremoni penutupan. Selain kurator dan para seniman, tim supporting staff ARTJOG—yang menjadi garda depan selama lebih dari dua bulan penyelenggaraan—turut menyampaikan aspirasi mereka, menegaskan pentingnya keterbukaan dan ruang yang aman serta inklusif dalam membangun ekosistem seni.

Direktur ARTJOG Heri Pemad menegaskan kembali tanggung jawab festival untuk menyediakan ruang yang representatif bagi pemikiran artistik, sekaligus menjaga keberlanjutan para pelaku yang menghidupkan ekosistem seni. “Tanpa kepercayaan para seniman dan kepedulian publik, ARTJOG akan kehilangan maknanya,” ujarnya.

Malam penutupan kemudian bergeser menjadi perayaan yang lebih hangat melalui penampilan White Shoes and The Couples Company, disusul pertunjukan musik elektronik Les Garçons Aux Chaussures Blanches. Seni, percakapan, dan musik pun bertemu dalam satu momen penutup yang terasa seperti perayaan atas perjalanan yang telah dilalui bersama.

Namun, berakhirnya Generatio sekaligus menjadi awal perjalanan berikutnya. Menyambut dua dekade ARTJOG pada 2027, festival ini berkomitmen memperkuat tata kelolanya dan menghadirkan pengalaman estetika yang lebih matang, inklusif, kritis, sekaligus berpihak pada keberlangsungan ekosistem seni. Sejalan dengan tema Legatum, edisi mendatang akan menelusuri gagasan tentang warisan—dari nilai-nilai seni rupa dan budaya hingga wacana historis yang akan diwariskan kepada generasi mendatang.

Setelah 19 tahun, pencapaian ARTJOG tidak lagi hanya dapat diukur dari karya-karya yang dipresentasikan, tetapi juga dari percakapan yang berhasil diciptakannya. ARS LONGA: GENERATIO berakhir dengan sebuah gagasan yang sederhana namun mendasar: seni tidak hanya bertahan melalui apa yang ditinggalkannya, tetapi juga melalui kesadaran yang ditanamkannya kepada kita.
