Air Pasang (Tidal Water), 2023
used and new fishing nets, marine debris, iron, and ropes
280 x 280 x 300 cm
Presented by Nadi Gallery
Seawater is crucial to life on land, producing clouds and marking new chapters in life with its tides. From the beginning of life in the oceans to Noah’s post-flood era and modern threats like rising sea levels from global warming, the sea has always been the last destination for all kinds of objects from land, from waste to land reclamation projects. In 2021, Iwan Yusuf observed tides returning debris to reclaimed areas in Manado, Indonesia. The box-shaped forest in this work, inspired by banyan trees, rice, cotton, and the sky, reflects Pancasila, the country’s national philosophy.

wood, mycelium leather
250 x 250 x 400 cm
Presented by ROH
Antara Muara is a response to the erosion in one of the villages in the coastal area of Muara Gembong, Bekasi, West Java. This artwork was created on-site, using leftover wooden materials and building debris, and it takes the form of mangrove tree roots and the traditional stilt house architecture typical of coastal settlements. On the top part of the installation, artist Syaiful Aulia Garibaldi incorporated a drawing made using the laser engraving technique on mycelium mushroom leather.

Dismantling Nostalgia, 2024
patched archival prints, oil and acrylic paintings on canvas, ropes, metal scaffolding
410 x 310 cm
Presented by kohesi Initiatives
This work reflects on the nostalgia for the “good old days” often idealised through the “mooi indie” image of peaceful life in the archipelago. Depicting farmers under serene skies, this romanticised view hides the harsh realities of colonial injustice, oppression, and inequality. Monuments celebrating imperial expansion only reinforce this narrative. Nostalgia, rooted in the 17th century, evokes a longing for a lost “space of experience” in both personal and collective memories. With its complex nature, nostalgia often distorts history, especially in the glorification of colonial and dictatorial regimes.

Tisna Sanjaya
Ganjel, 2024
installation, sound art, painting, woodcut, drawing on canvas
400 x 200 cm
Presented by Artsociates
Ganjel explores personal and communal expressions through documents like letters, diplomas, and government decrees from Tisna Sanjaya’s time as a visual art lecturer at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). A dining table and plastic waste scale support these archives, with the table adorned with woodcut ornaments resembling soccer strategies, linking personal stories to plastic waste in Batu Rengat Village. Displayed on the table are eleven ITB art educators who helped shape Indonesian art. The installation features Surit Uncuing bird calls layered over bureaucratic files and a 4 x 4-meter canvas highlighting Tisna’s reflections on national life and creativity.
