BIYAN + GAYA presents Porcelain Couture: The Afterlife of Materials at Biyan The Gallery, Jakarta, bringing together two distinct worlds—couture and ceramics—in a thoughtful exploration of craftsmanship, transformation and material memory.

At its core is an idea of giving remnants a second life. GAYA CERAMIC contributes porcelain fragments, prototypes and kiln survivors, while BIYAN brings embroidered textiles, couture fabrics, beads and preserved remnants from its atelier. Materials once destined to remain unseen become the starting point for entirely new works.

The contrast is central to the collaboration. Porcelain is shaped by fire; fabric by thread, embroidery and movement. One is rigid, the other fluid. Yet both carry the imprint of the hand and the memory of their making.

Through intuitive composition as mentioned by Michela Foppiani, Creative Director of Gaya Ceramic, layering and meticulous handcraft, these fragments are transformed into sculptural objects that exist between fashion, ceramics, contemporary art and collectible design. Each work is unique—no molds are repeated, and no composition replicated—allowing the character and imperfections of each material to remain visible.

Porcelain Couture proposes a broader view of sustainability: one that values not only what materials can become, but the craftsmanship, cultural memory and stories already embedded within them.

Here, luxury is reconsidered through transformation. Couture acquires a new permanence; porcelain takes on the softness and ornament of fashion; and remnants once overlooked become objects of desire.

The result is an elegant creative exchange between BIYAN’s fashion artistry and GAYA CERAMIC’s Balinese savoir-faire—a reminder that sometimes the most compelling new creations begin with what has already been made.
