Where Craft, Art, and Fashion Converge

In Venice, a new kind of encounter takes shape. Beginning 25 April 2026, Fondazione Dries Van Noten presents its first presentation, “The Only True Protest Is Beauty”—a title that reframes beauty not as comfort, but as a force of provocation.

Set within the layered interiors of Palazzo Pisani Moretta, the presentation unfolds as a sensorial journey where more than 200 works—spanning fashion, jewellery, art, design, photography, glass, and ceramics—enter into dialogue with frescoed ceilings and centuries-old architecture. Here, beauty is not offered as resolution, but as tension: something that unsettles, questions, and opens space for the unexpected.

Curated by Dries Van Noten alongside Geert Bruloot, the exhibition moves intuitively across 20 rooms, where each encounter feels at once deliberate and instinctive. Mastery meets experimentation, while heritage intersects with emerging voices—allowing craft to unfold as a language of emotion, carrying memory, culture, and the trace of the human hand. Fashion plays a central role throughout. Archival silhouettes from Christian Lacroix and Rei Kawakubo for Comme des Garçons appear not as static references, but as living inquiries into form and meaning, while younger voices like Ayham Hassan introduce narratives shaped by constraint and resilience.

Elsewhere, unexpected dialogues emerge—contemporary glassworks meet historic Venetian collections, mineral-formed objects sit beside experimental ceramics, and sculptural interventions subtly disrupt sacred spaces. Together, these juxtapositions create a rhythm of harmony and dissonance, where beauty feels at once fragile and confrontational.

As founders Dries Van Noten and Patrick Vangheluwe reflect, “We are interested in beauty not as an answer, but as a question. It is not an escape from reality, but a way of engaging with it. When beauty allows for ambiguity, slowness, and contradiction, when it disturbs rather than resolves, then it becomes a subtle form of protest. This Presentation is an invitation to look longer, to stay with uncertainty, and to recognize making as a deeply human act in which concept and craft converge, carrying both culture and the memory of the hands.”

More than an exhibition, the presentation unfolds as an inquiry—inviting visitors to look longer, sit with uncertainty, and recognize making as a deeply human act where concept and craft converge.

Access remains intentionally intimate. As Palazzo Pisani Moretta prepares for future restoration, entry is granted through the Fondazione’s Friend Card program, offering a rare opportunity to experience the space in its current state, where history and contemporary expression quietly coexist.
