The Ephemeral Beauty of Water Into Tactile Artistry: Hand-Knotted Rugs
In a masterful exploration of nature’s inherent poetry, celebrated architect and designer David Rockwell, founder of the acclaimed Rockwell Group, introduces Flow as Form, a new rug collection for The Rug Company that distills the ephemeral beauty of water into tactile artistry.

The three new additions to The Rug Company’s hand-knotted range evoke the ever-changing essence of water, their tonal palettes and sculpted textures reflecting the rhythms of tide and time. Subtle variations in pile height lend depth and dimension, while abstract patterns—softly linear, fluid, and painterly—imbue interiors with a sense of serene movement.

“Throughout our creative collaboration with The Rug Company, we’ve explored an obsession with nature’s contrasts,” Rockwell reflects. “These new rug designs continue in that vein, looking at all the forms that water can take—from placid and solid, to rippling and rushing. We see the patterns as textile landscapes, and working with The Rug Company is a joy because their craftsmanship brings the designs to life.”

Each rug is meticulously handmade by The Rug Company’s master weavers in Nepal, employing centuries-old techniques passed down through generations. Crafted from a refined blend of wool and bamboo-derived silk-like fibres, the rugs feature a distinctive, chunkier knotting technique that enhances their luxurious texture. The soft lustre of bamboo silk further highlights Rockwell’s tonal abstractions, resulting in pieces that anchor a room with quiet elegance.

With Flow as Form, Rockwell offers rugs that are both sculptural and sensorial—timeless centrepieces that embody the gentle dynamism of water.

The collection is available in a range of sizes exclusively through www.therugcompany.com, with prices starting from £2,902 / €3,237 (1.83 x 1.22 m) or £1,300 / €1,450 per m².
