NADI GALLERY: “Fragmen”, A SOLO EXHIBITION BY AGUS SUWAGE

Nadi Gallery: February 13 – March 12, 2025

“Fragmen”, a solo exhibition by Agus Suwage, was born from the idea of making a documentary movie about Agus Suwage himself. This documentary, which is made in the style of cinema verité, tells a story about a close relationship between Agus Suwage, one of Indonesia’s renowned artists, and Biantoro Santoso, the owner of Nadi Gallery. From this movie, it is evident that a good relationship between artist and gallerist is very important in the process of organizing an exhibition, in which the final result is reflected in this exhibition itself.

I have witnessed the closeness between Agus Suwage and Biantoro Santoso since I was a kid, and I see their relationship as more than just a professional one but began as a friendship that has lasted until this day. After participating in all the movie production and exhibition preparation process, I have come to know Agus Suwage more personally and learn that the intimacy between the artist and the gallery is the key component in a lasting relationship between both parties.

Through this exhibition and movie, I know that the source of inspiration and creative process of Agus Suwage stems from conversation, discussion and even from the artist’s daily life, and I hope that everyone who watches can capture the creative process of Agus Suwage as a senior Indonesian artist.

In preparing everything, we at Nadi Gallery, collaborated with many parties. Firstly, we certainly are very grateful to Agus Suwage, as he has given his consent for making the documentary and has prepared this exhibition with little preparation time. Our deepest gratitude also goes to Kamar Biroe team, who played a big role in the movie production process, from planning the idea to the creation of the “Fragile” movie. Credit also goes to Mr. Wahyudin, for his dedication as the writer, and to Ms. Izabel Jahja for kindly agreeing to open this exhibition. Pameran tunggal Agus Suwage, “Fragmen”, terlahir dari sebuah pemikiran untuk membuat film dokumenter mengenai Agus Suwage. Dokumenter yang dibuat dengan mengusung gaya cinema verité ini menceritakan tentang hubungan baik antara Agus Suwage, seorang seniman ternama Indonesia, dan Biantoro Santoso, pemilik dari Nadi Gallery. Dari film ini dapat dilihat bahwa relasi yang baik antara seorang seniman dan pemilik galeri sangat penting dalam proses penyelenggaraan sebuah pameran, dimana hasil akhirnya dapat kita lihat dengan terselenggaranya pameran ini.

Saya sudah menyaksikan kedekatan antara Agus Suwage dan Biantoro Santoso dari sejak saya kecil, dan saya melihat hubungan mereka bukan hanya sekedar hubungan profesional tetapi diawali dengan hubungan pertemanan yang berlanjut hingga sekarang. Setelah mengikuti semua proses pembuatan film dan persiapan pameran, saya mengenal Agus Suwage lebih dekat dan saya belajar bahwa keakraban itulah yang menjadi kunci kerja sama yang langgeng antara seniman dan galeri.

Melalui pameran dan film ini pula saya mengetahui bahwa sumber inspirasi dan proses kreatif dari Agus Suwage berasal dari obrolan, diskusi dan bahkan kehidupan sehari-hari sang seniman, dan saya berharap semua yang menyaksikan dapat menangkap proses kreatif dari Agus Suwage selaku perupa senior Indonesia.
