Where Fluid Menswear, Resort Ease and The Allure of Escape Become The Poetry of Travel

After the revolution comes the escape. With ELSEWHERE, Yosafat Dwi Kurniawan transforms menswear into a journey of departure, discovery and quiet self-reckoning.

There are moments when staying becomes harder than leaving. When the noise of the city, the complications of relationships and the relentless rhythm of everyday life create a desire for somewhere—anywhere—else. It is this instinct for escape that lies at the heart of ELSEWHERE, Yosafat’s Spring 2027 menswear collection presented at New Mode at Fashion Nation Senayan City 2026.

Following the introspective fluidity of Après la Révolution, his recent womenswear presentation at The Langham Jakarta, ELSEWHERE continues Yosafat’s fascination with movement and liberation, this time translated through the language of resort dressing.

His inspiration comes from an unlikely cinematic companion: Nia Dinata’s Arisan! 2 (2011). Beneath its polished metropolitan world lies a familiar tension—politics, romance, friendship and the quiet exhaustion of navigating contemporary life. The film’s journey to a remote island becomes a metaphor for something deeper: the need to step outside the familiar in order to find oneself again.

That idea gives the collection its distinctive sense of ease. Fifteen (15) looks unfold in lightweight lyocell and viscose linen from Asia Pacific Rayon (APR), complemented by linen and denim. Shirts, sleeveless tops, jackets, fluid trousers, shorts and weightless scarves form a wardrobe designed for movement. The palette travels from golden sand and ocean blue to white foam, punctuated by black and other quiet neutrals.

Yet beneath the apparent ease is a sophisticated exercise in technique. Slashing cuts through selected tops reveal flashes of skin, introducing an understated sensuality to otherwise relaxed silhouettes. Geometric ethnic motifs appear in sequinned formations inspired by tribal textiles and distant destinations, their intricate execution bringing traditional references into dialogue with contemporary technology through Nomatex.

The ocean becomes another visual language. Lyocell is treated with a blue gradient dye, its colour dissolving like waves approaching the shore. Scarves carrying ethereal watercolour compositions by artist Jerome Jonathan add another floating dimension, blurring the line between garment and artwork.
