YOSAFAT: APRÈS LA RÉVOLUTION — WHEN STRUCTURE LEARNS TO LET GO

Yosafat’s new femininity
Après la révolution, Yosafat Kurniawan signals a transformation of his own design language. “For me, this is a revolution,” he says, distinguishing it from evolution: evolution happens slowly; revolution demands rapid adaptation and change. The distinction is telling. After 15 years of a recognisable vocabulary built around defined waists, sculpted construction and controlled femininity, Yosafat loosens his grip.

Across 30 looks, familiar precision gives way to lighter, more fluid silhouettes—longer lines, relaxed proportions and drapery that allows the body to move rather than conform. Yet this is not a rejection of Yosafat’s identity. He does not abandon structure; he loosens its authority. The result is a femininity that remains assured but feels considerably less prescribed.

The transformation is also evident in the collection. Instead of depending heavily on sequins, Yosafat employs NOMATEX embroidery enhanced by laser-cut techniques, while introducing drapery and a quieter material vocabulary of jersey, voile, tweed, viscose rayon and Lyocell from Asia Pacific Rayon. The softened palette—bone, cream, turquoise, sage, denim, red, black, silver and gold—further distances the collection from his traditionally emphatic use of colour.

But Après la révolution is not revolutionary in fashion’s broader context. Its relaxed silhouettes and 1970s ease are hardly unprecedented. Its significance lies closer to home: this is a revolution within Yosafat’s own practice. The collection tests whether a designer so closely identified with control can relinquish some of it without losing his signature.

Perhaps the most revealing admission comes when Yosafat says he has yet to decide whether these new silhouettes will continue into future collections, leaving the answer partly to the market. That uncertainty makes the collection more compelling, not less.

After 15 years, Yosafat is asking a deceptively simple question: what happens when an established design language is no longer enough?

Après la révolution offers an answer—not through rupture, but through release. Yosafat’s revolution is not in abandoning the old language, but in allowing it to breathe and evolve.
