Glass is Envisioned as A Dynamic form of Expression

In the heart of Murano, within the historic Palazzo Barovier&Toso, the Barovier&Toso ARTE gallery presents Stillness in Motion, a poetic encounter with the monumental glass sculptures of Czech artist Vlastimil Beránek. More than a tribute, the exhibition reflects on glass as a contemporary medium for emotional and intellectual expression.

Vlastimil Beránek

Vlastimil Beránek, a third-generation glassmaker, fuses tradition with innovation. Working in solid cast glass, his sculptural forms are inspired by elemental forces—water, fire, gravity—and exist at the intersection of fine and applied art. His abstract, often monumental pieces capture motion in stillness, and light in density.

The technique behind these works—glass casting—is both ancient and exacting. Revived in the mid-20th century by pioneers like Stanislav Libenský and Jaroslava Brychtová, the method enables the creation of luminous, three-dimensional forms. Beránek continues this lineage, revealing chromatic gradients and organic contours that echo nature’s own designs.

Set in the historic Sala dell’Acqua, a 1920s architectural gem crowned by four Barovier&Toso chandeliers and overlooking Murano’s Rio dei Vetrai, the exhibition space deepens the dialogue between past and present. A dedicated bar area invites guests into conversation, reinforcing the gallery’s cultural mission.

With this exhibition, Barovier&Toso ARTE reaffirms its mission to reframe glass beyond its decorative heritage—embracing it as a platform for artistic exploration. While rooted in Venetian craftsmanship, the gallery turns eastward toward the Bohemian tradition, embodied by one of its most compelling voices.
