From Indonesia to Milan
This April, Indonesian designer Zulyo Kumara is invited to present his work at SaloneSatellite, part of Salone del Mobile.Milano 2026—bringing a material-driven practice shaped by craftsmanship, process, and a contemporary design language to the global stage.

Working through a material-led approach, Zulyo’s practice is shaped as much by process as by form, where each object emerges from a close engagement with texture, structure, and making. At its core is a philosophy of reintroducing the human touch into design, allowing intuition, imperfection, and tactility to coexist with precision.

Sarang Rattan Coffee Table
In Milan, this ISI Yogyakarta–trained designer presents a series of chairs and tables that unfold as a study in contrast. The Sarang Rattan Coffee Table, with its interwoven tubular structure, introduces a sense of movement and continuity, while the KAYA Rattan Lounge Chair explores a more enveloping, tactile form. Alongside them, the Kurv Dining Chair offers a lighter, more industrial expression, contrasted by the warmth and rhythm of the LUWES Rattan Bench.

Across the collection, material becomes both structure and expression—woven surfaces meet sculptural forms, while rigid elements are softened through process. Each piece holds a quiet balance between weight and lightness, tradition and contemporary thinking.

Rather than replicating heritage, Zulyo Kumara reinterprets it, translating familiar techniques into a language that feels both grounded and forward-looking. It is within this dialogue between past and present that his work finds clarity—where objects move beyond function to become vessels of experience, identity, and memory.

At SaloneSatellite 2026, this exploration takes shape: subtle, materially rich, and deeply considered.
