A Conceptual Couture Debut That Transforms Indonesian Weaving into A Universal Language of Craftsmanship, and Innovation

To celebrate a decade of his eponymous label, Wilsen Willim presented Algorithm: Universal Language, a milestone collection that not only marked his 10th anniversary but also introduced his first couture collection. Staged at Hotel Mulia Senayan on 8 July 2026, the runway featured 60 men’s and women’s looks that reflected the designer’s most ambitious exploration of Indonesian craftsmanship to date.

At the heart of the collection is an intriguing proposition: traditional weaving is itself an algorithm. Inspired by the mathematical precision of warp and weft, Wilsen reimagines Indonesian tenun as a universal visual language—one built on sequences, repetition, and coded patterns that transcend cultures. “Numbers exceed language. It’s a language that everybody from all over the world understands,” the designer explains, framing heritage textiles through the lens of contemporary approach.

That concept unfolds through an innovative textile development combining recycled denim yarns by Ecotouch with handwoven textiles from across Indonesia, including Garut silk weaving from West Java, Dayak Iban weaving from Kapuas Hulu in West Kalimantan, Jembrana songket from Bali, and Minang songket from Halaban, West Sumatra. By integrating locally produced recycled fibers into traditional weaving, Wilsen addresses both textile waste and the increasing scarcity of weaving yarns while supporting the livelihoods of Indonesia’s artisan communities.

The algorithmic narrative extended beyond the garments themselves. Developed with longtime collaborator Ican Harem, woven motifs from the four regions were digitally scanned and translated through artificial intelligence into musical compositions, creating a runway soundtrack generated directly from the mathematical structures of the textiles. The same visual language also inspired bespoke Cirebon hand-drawn batik motifs, reinforcing the collection’s dialogue between heritage and innovation.

Rendered in a predominantly indigo palette that echoes recycled denim, the collection was punctuated by black, white, grey, electric blue, and metallic gold, silver, and bronze accents. Wilsen juxtaposed the refinement of Indonesian textiles with rebellious influences, introducing leather harnesses, corsets, biker jackets, belts, and elevated aprons alongside his signature contemporary tailoring. Traditional-inspired collars recalling kebaya Kartini, beskap, and janggan silhouettes further underscored the conversation between heritage and modernity.

Accessories completed the vision through collaborations with Indonesian brands, including metal jewelry by Subeng Klasik, leather accessories by Peau, and bespoke footwear by Bocorocco.

With Algorithm: Universal Language, Wilsen preserves the artistry and social value embedded in every woven thread. It is a collection that signals a new chapter for the designer, establishing his couture practice through an intellectual narrative that is as compelling as the garments themselves.
