SHAPING NEW POSSIBILITIES AS MILAN MEETS INDONESIA

Jakarta becomes the first stop of Salone del Mobile.Milano’s new international tour, bringing the SaloneSatellite Permanent Collection 1998–2026 to Indonesia Design Week 2026 at Indonesia Design District (IDD) PIK2. From 18 September to 18 October 2026, the exhibition presents 55 objects selected from the Permanent Collection’s 415 works, tracing 27 years of emerging talent, experimentation and collaborations between young designers and the global design industry.

Jakarta marks the third international stop for the SaloneSatellite Permanent Collection, following Hong Kong in 2024 and the Italian Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka—opening a new chapter in Salone del Mobile.Milano’s global journey.

The collection offers a living map of how ideas evolve—from prototype to product, from emerging designer to established name, and from creative research to industrial production. As Marva Griffin Wilshire, Founder and Curator of SaloneSatellite, explains, its purpose is to give emerging talent visibility, connect ideas with industry, and show how a prototype can evolve into a product, a career and ultimately part of design culture. Among the works on view are designs by Sebastian Wrong, Nendo, Oskar Zięta, Sebastian Herkner, Nika Zupanc and Studio Formafantasma, alongside the latest addition to the collection, Balancing Boxes by Front for Porro.

The Jakarta exhibition also creates a direct connection with Indonesia. Studio Hendro Hadinata’s Plank Chair, developed with Jakarta-based EVERY Collections, returns to its home country as part of the selection—a symbolic gesture within a broader exchange across Asia. This tribute will extend across Asia with the bamboo vases by Shahril Faisal, linked to the presence of the Malaysian collective Tanggam at SaloneSatellite; the metal tray by the Korean designer Suntae Kim; and the Interlaced screen lamp by the Taiwanese design studio ViiChendesign for Camino.

The initiative gains further significance through the presence of Maria Porro, Marketing & Communications Director of Porro and President of Salone del Mobile.Milano. Her visit brings the Milan design community into closer conversation with Indonesia’s designers, architects and creative ecosystem, while introducing the vision for Salone del Mobile.Milano 2027.

“Indonesia today is one such place” where the future of design is particularly clear to envisage, Maria Porro notes, highlighting the country’s intersection of rapid urban development, material culture, craftsmanship, innovation and a new generation of creative talent.

From Milan to Jakarta, SaloneSatellite is not simply exporting an exhibition—it is opening a dialogue. One where talent, industry and culture meet, and where Indonesia increasingly becomes part of the global conversation shaping the future of design.
