Jil Sander’s reinterpretation of the S 64 chair draws inspiration from the elegant finishes of a Steinway grand piano, the luxurious leather of an English car, and the refined matt nickel silver found in architectural elements. Sander emphasizes, “My goal was to take the S 64 as Breuer meant it to be and bring it into the here and now,” highlighting the chair’s iconic status while infusing it with contemporary flair through high-quality materials and meticulous details, reflecting her background in architecture and interior design.

Thonet ensures the longevity and sustainability of its furniture by utilizing premium materials and traditional craftsmanship, which contribute to a long life cycle. As Sander states, “You can tell you have a design classic when you never tire of it and if it’s a piece that someone would be pleased to inherit one day.” Their designs are built to be passed down through generations and can be revitalized at their Frankenberg facility, emphasizing efficient resource use and a commitment to sustainable practices.

The alignment of Thonet’s design philosophy with Jil Sander’s values are evident in their shared dedication to exceptional quality, meticulous craftsmanship, and timeless aesthetics. Sander notes, “Quality is justified and it is beneficial. Only those who have never experienced quality are able to go without it.” Both prioritize sustainability and longevity, focusing on creating well-designed, usable pieces that endure over time. Their collaboration showcases a mutual appreciation for innovative design that enhances traditional values while maintaining a modern sensibility.

The JS . THONET signature collection exemplifies these principles, featuring elegant reinterpretations of the iconic S 64 cantilever chair with high-gloss lacquered wood details and refined tubular steel frames. The collection includes two lines, SERIOUS and NORDIC, each showcasing distinct finishes and color palettes, such as glossy titanium-like frames and warm matt nickel silver. Additionally, the versatile B 97 side table complements the chairs while offering practical functionality, further reflecting the commitment to sustainability and timeless design. As Sander aptly puts it, “Creativity requires continuity and habit, but it is also not possible without a vision.”

The JS . THONET collection celebrates the craftsmanship and design legacy of the Bauhaus movement, merging classic aesthetics with modern sensibilities. Sander’s approach elevates these iconic pieces, ensuring they resonate with contemporary audiences while honoring their historical significance.
