Preserving the C-Chair’s Lightness and Versatility in an Outdoor-ready form

GUBI unveils the C-Chair Outdoor —an elegant evolution of a mid-century classic designed for contemporary open-air living. Reinterpreted with durability in mind, the outdoor edition retains the C-Chair’s signature lightness and restraint while introducing materials engineered to withstand the elements. Crafted from solid teak and paired with weather-resistant French cane, the design extends Marcel Gascoin’s philosophy of functional beauty beyond the dining room into terraces, gardens, and hospitality settings.

The seat and backrest—defined by the design’s signature six-way French cane weave—are reinterpreted using high-density polyethylene, handwoven to replicate the warmth and visual lightness of natural cane while ensuring durability against the elements.

Compact with slender silhouette and versatile, the chair is designed to optimise space around outdoor dining settings, balancing comfort with efficiency—an ethos central to Gascoin’s work. Originally conceived for post-war housing, the C-Chair (1947) reflects his belief in functional, human-scaled design, influenced by the practical constraints of maritime living.
