CLASSICON 2024 – THE ART OF MINIMALISM

Eileen Gray’s Faubourg Rug Design (Design: Eileen Gray, 1920s)

Another unique rug based on a design by Eileen Gray joins  ClassiCon ‘s exclusive rug collection just in time for Maison & Objet 2024. The new Faubourg design is the epitome of minimalism: set against a square, natural white background, three simple black lines create an exciting dynamic. This timeless and elegant design is based on a gouache that was created by Eileen Gray in the 1920s. ClassiCon has now transferred this design into a high-quality rug made of 100% finest virgin wool. Hand-knotted and manufactured in Nepal to the highest standards, Faubourg once again puts the artistic work of the Irish designer in the spotlight.

The natural white background acts like a canvas, providing a neutral frame for the black minimalist shapes: two curved lines – a thinly drawn semicircle and a slightly thicker open arc – create a reference to Eileen Gray‘s furniture designs. The circle, for example, is the central design element in the iconic Adjustable Table E 1027 (1927), while the Monte Carlo Sofa (1929) is characterised by a curved seat and backrest. An angled line running along one edge of the rug forms an effective contrast to the circular motif.

Eileen Gray not only created some of the most significant furniture classics of the 20th century, but also ran a studio where rugs were produced according to her designs. So too, the Faubourg Rug, which she exhibited in her shop window in the 1920s as a one-off piece together with matching furniture designs. The Faubourg Rug, whose name is inspired by the location of Gray’s studio on Rue de Faubourg St. Honoré in Paris, now expands the  ClassiCon collection of rugs designed by Eileen Gray.

The rug is made of 100% hand-spun New Zealand virgin wool and dyed with environmentally friendly pigments, tested according to the OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100. The ancient art form of “Tibetan knotting” is used in the hand-knotting process, a technique that creates a particularly soft and silky feel. The knotting density is 80 knots per square inch, which corresponds to approximately 124,000 knots per square metre. Faubourg is available in 200 x 200 cm and in 300 x 300 cm, as well as in customised sizes.

Like all ClassiCon rugs, Faubourg is manufactured in close partnership with the fair-trade organisation Label STEP in Nepal. Label STEP guarantees good working and living conditions for the people in the production areas and is committed to promoting environmentally friendly manufacturing processes.
