Inside 30 Montaigne, Through the Eyes of the Young Designer Who Witnessed Dior’s Final Chapter

A glimpse into the Dior that existed before history became legend. A Season at Dior preserves an important chapter in fashion history through the eyes of Jürgen Michaelsen, the 21-year-old German who arrived at 30 Montaigne in 1956 after being “miraculously” recruited by Christian Dior himself. There, amid the premières, petites mains and models, he witnessed the intimate alchemy behind haute couture—and the making of Dior’s Libre line.

Published by Flammarion, A Season at Dior captures that extraordinary year, when Christian Dior’s vision was still alive at the House he built. It is a sensitive portrait of Dior as discreet, generous and visionary, told by a young man whose encounter would shape his own destiny.

The story unfolds through rare imagery: a photo essay by Loomis Dean for LIFE, photographs by Avedon, Cartier-Bresson, Henry Clarke and others, alongside previously unpublished Dior archive material.

After Dior and Madame Grès, Yorn Michaelsen established his own House on the Champs-Élysées in 1962.

A Season at Dior is a story of mentorship, creativity and transmission—of discovering how to see, create and ultimately find one’s own voice.
