A 1923 Design Returns with its Radical Geometry Intact
For Paris Design Week 2026, Louis Vuitton brings Pierre Legrain’s radical design language back into focus with the Kubic Armchair, the latest addition to the Maison’s Pierre Legrain Homage Collection within its Objets Nomades universe.

Unveiled at the Hôtel Particulier on rue de Martignac, Paris, the piece extends Louis Vuitton’s long-standing dialogue between heritage, craftsmanship and contemporary design. Originally conceived by Pierre Legrain and commissioned by Jacques Doucet in 1923, the Kubic is defined by an uncompromising geometric vocabulary: a trapezoidal backrest, sharply faceted armrests and distinctive side legs. Its cubic construction sits at the intersection of Art Deco and Cubism, giving the chair a sculptural, almost architectural presence.

What makes the revival compelling is how little the original idea needs to be altered. Louis Vuitton retains Legrain’s essential silhouette while translating it through Nomade leather and rosewood—a meeting of historic form and contemporary material craftsmanship. The result is not an exercise in nostalgia, but a demonstration of how a century-old design can retain its visual force.

Legrain’s connection to Louis Vuitton runs deeper than the archive. A decorator, illustrator, bookbinder and cabinetmaker, he collaborated with the House during the 1920s and created the Louis Vuitton Dressing Table, the Maison’s first furniture piece. His work coincided with Gaston-Louis Vuitton’s embrace of the decorative arts, helping establish a design vocabulary that continues to inform the House today.
The Kubic arrives amid Louis Vuitton’s broader expansion into furniture and interiors, following the launch of its Home Collections in 2025. Presented alongside works connected to Pierre Legrain and Charlotte Perriand, as well as contemporary creations by Raw Edges and Franck Genser, the collection places historical references in direct conversation with contemporary design.

The Kubic makes a precise proposition: good design does not necessarily age—it evolves in meaning. Conceived in 1923, preserved through the archive and expressed anew in 2026, Legrain’s geometric radicalism remains remarkably relevant.
