ROCKWELL GROUP COMPLETES THE DINING DESTINATION AT 550 MADISON

A New Social Landmark

One of New York City’s most recognisable architectural landmarks enters a new chapter as Rockwell Group unveils Bar Chimera and COTE 550 at 550 Madison. Marking the final phase of the building’s reimagination, the two restaurants complete 550 Madison’s new dining destination, while Sushi Yoshitake is set to open on the mezzanine later this year.

The hospitality spaces complete Rockwell Group’s broader vision for 550 Madison, following the design of its premium workplace amenities in 2022. Since the building was acquired by Olayan Group and Chelsfield in 2016, the studio has guided every stage of its evolution, reshaping the former Sony Tower—originally designed by architects Philip Johnson and John Burgee in 1984—into a contemporary destination where architecture, hospitality, work, and public life converge. Defined by its iconic Chippendale-inspired roofline, the postmodern landmark now welcomes hospitality spaces that honour its architectural legacy while extending Midtown’s vibrant street life indoors through thoughtful materiality, light, and atmosphere.

Bar Chimera
Located at street level, Bar Chimera reimagines the traditional lobby as an inviting extension of the public plaza, creating an urban oasis amid the energy of Midtown Manhattan. Centred around a soaring Norfolk pine tree, the space is defined by monumental illuminated arches in hammered metallic plaster and distressed leather that subtly echo 550 Madison’s signature postmodern curves, while oversized textured-glass pendants reference Tiffany craftsmanship and the nearby Theatre District.

Floor-to-ceiling windows, softened by sheer drapery and café curtains, preserve a visual connection to Madison Avenue, while custom ombré wool carpets by Rockwell Group for The Rug Company evoke the changing seasons through abstract cobblestone-inspired patterns. Three distinctive bars—the wine, martini, and whiskey bars—anchor the interior, each expressed through its own palette of materials, bespoke detailing, and custom lighting, creating an atmosphere that feels both elegant and unmistakably New York.

COTE 550
On the lower level, COTE 550 unfolds as an immersive dining experience that begins with a translucent resin staircase illuminated by a vibrant neon artwork by Turner Prize-winning artist Martin Creed, leading guests to the restaurant’s glowing dry-ageing room and signature bar. A lively lounge with a DJ booth transitions into the main dining room through a calming green portal, where the design draws inspiration from the mythical city of El Dorado.

Golden mesh lighting sculptures, mirrored ceilings, reflective surfaces, lush greenery, and a tranquil turquoise water feature create an immersive environment where light and shadow continually reshape the space. Subtle references to Korean culture, expressed through custom wallcoverings and atmospheric lighting, further enrich the restaurant’s contemporary identity. While distinct from Bar Chimera, COTE 550 shares a thoughtful design language that honours 550 Madison’s architectural heritage, transforming the landmark into a destination where hospitality, culture, and urban life seamlessly intersect.

The design draws on the building’s extraordinary architectural legacy but reinterprets it through a contemporary lens, balancing grandeur with intimacy and creating environments that evolve throughout the day and night.”
