Ova Amber, an addition to the Ova pendant collection, is the Studio’s first foray into experimenting with colour in glass — a notable divergence from the thoughtfully muted tones of the expanded Matthew McCormick product line. As a complement to his signature palette of precious metals, the glass Ova Amber pendant will premiere globally for Milan Design Week, to be made available in Europe along with Ova White in clear and frosted finishes.

The design for Ova was a departure from McCormick’s routine philosophy, as was the experimentation in a range of colourways to accent the final product. Typically focused on a deeply iterative process on a path to perfectionism, mastering the ideal colour gradient and diffusion of light for Ova Amber was an exercise in precision while still allowing the glass to reveal its natural attributes. By combining enamel white and bronze glass with an artisanal blow-through technique, Ova Amber boasts an elegant gradation and balance of colour while still maintaining the quintessential Ova form.
“I wanted Ova to feel instinctively familiar, but still offer a level of oddity that would make it compelling and magical,” says McCormick. “The shape was inspired by something you’d find in nature, akin to a living force – giving off a unique energy that can almost transform the object based on both the external refractions on the glass, and the light itself. Using amber was an intentional selection for our first product using colour because it adds a dimension that is rich, moody and romantic without screaming for attention.”
Ova Amber’s luminescence brings a depth of movement and ambient warmth through its womb-like, enamel inner body and consciously considered outer shape, from the amount of space between each layer of glass to the primal spine detail which adds depth, and also obscures the light source inside.
“There is a sense of calm and tranquility from Ova Amber that is really special, even moreso in person,” adds McCormick. “While we were purposeful in our approach to standardize Ova’s form, we know that glass is a dynamic material; I appreciate that every piece is slightly different for those that take the time to notice. The result is a delicate interplay between colour and light that feels almost poetic.”
Whether hanging alone as a single fixture at a bedside, undulating over a dining table or cascading down a grand stairwell, Ova Amber is a modular pendant system that transcends light as art in a way that is both contemporary and timeless. Ova Amber pendants are a white enamel inner body and an amber-toned glass outer body with an ombre gradient. Ova in white with a clear or frosted outer body are also available in the collection. Custom configurations and micro-canopies are available upon request.
