New Lounge Chair, Stool and Side Table with Architectural Expression
On the occasion of the Salone del Mobile.Milano 2024, ClassiCon presents its new VOLKSHAUS range of furniture, designed by the renowned architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron. In addition to an oak lounge chair and stool, with seats and backrests of hard-wearing cord, the collection also includes a matching side table made of solid oak. The complex construction of the frames with intersecting X shapes of square timber is inspired by traditional wooden joints used in Japanese architecture. Due to its asymmetrical design, the sculptural furniture looks different from every angle – and can be used in a wide variety of rooms.
The centrepiece of the new VOLKSHAUS series is the Lounge Chair: this comfortable seating furniture consists of a robust, stable timber substructure and two solid oak wooden frames with cord-strung seats and backrests. Thanks to the surfaces with the hard-wearing, slightly elastic cord, the 74 cm wide and 71 cm deep armchair does not appear bulky or voluminous, but transparent and light. The same applies to the 64 cm wide and 45 cm deep stool, which can also be used as a footrest. The collection is complemented by a 48 cm high side table made of solid oak with a circular table top.

The central and unifying design feature of all pieces in the VOLKSHAUS range is the point at which the CNC-cut wooden legs intersect and interlock: this wooden connection appears simple, but is highly complex. It was created as part of a comprehensive research process by Herzog & de Meuron. Inspired by traditional wooden joints, this ingenious construction principle gives the furniture in the VOLKSHAUS range its sculptural character and architectural expression.
“Regarding the designs for the VOLKSHAUS series, we were immediately fascinated by the special aesthetics and the outstanding use of wood as a material,” explains ClassiCon Owner and ManagingDirector, Oliver Holy, who, together with Herzog & de Meuron, has already successfully positioned the CORKER furniture on the market. “The Lounge Chair, Stool, and Side Table complement our collection with timeless and expressive pieces of furniture.”
The new VOLKSHAUS Lounge Chair and Stool are available in natural oak (satin lacquer finish) or black stained oak (satin lacquer finish). The natural-coloured version comes with a dark sage green cord; the black-stained version is available with a black cord. On request, the Lounge Chair can be fitted with colour-coordinated loose cushions. The Lounge Chair and Stool are used wherever relaxed seating is required: in private living spaces as well as in prestigious waiting areas, lobbies, or hotel rooms. The furniture can be found, for example, in the Volkshaus Basel boutique hotel, which was designed by Herzog & de Meuron and gave the collection its name.
