Quiet Rhythm. Tactile Calm.

Woven Matter is a new collection of handwoven rugs inspired by the rhythm of architecture and the tactility of craft. Drawing from the quiet strength of Japanese buildings and the refined simplicity of Nordic traditions, each rug translates these ideas into soft, geometric compositions. Linie Design’s artisans weave natural fibres – wool, linen, and jute – chosen for their character and feel, creating rugs that bring depth and calm into a space.

Rather than simply decorating a floor, these rugs act like a subtle architecture underfoot. Rhythm, structure, and touch come together to create pieces that are understated yet powerful, adding warmth and pause to a room.

The collection debuted at 3daysofdesign 2025 in Echoes of Texture – a joint exhibition by Norm Architects, Linie Design,  and Karimoku Case curated by Pernille Vest. Rugs were shown vertically in oak frames inspired by Japanese Shinto gateways, turning each textile into a tactile work of art. Soft woven surfaces met clear timber structures, and furniture, art, and objects were curated to form an atmosphere where materials and cultures spoke quietly to each other.

At Linie Design’s flagship store, Woven Matter comes to life as a meeting point between textiles and sculpture. Softness meets strength; presence meets pause. Each handwoven rug is designed to be part of the architecture of a room—bringing warmth, rhythm, and calm through skilled craftsmanship and carefully chosen materials.

This flagship store—the first result of our collaboration—shows the collection alongside sculptural pieces. The gentle rhythm of the rugs contrasts with the weight of timber and stone, creating a tactile balance that highlights the unique character of each element. The store is not just a backdrop, but an expression of harmony in contrast: textile and timber, softness and strength, presence and pause.

“Materiality and texture are fundamental to how a space feels and, ultimately, how it’s experienced on an emotional level. Beyond form and function, it’s the tactile and tonal qualities of a space that linger in memory – the softness of a rug underfoot, the warmth of wood in your hand, the quiet depth of a woven surface. These sensory cues create atmosphere and help ground us in the present moment.”

Here, Japanese precision and poetry meet Danish clarity and function in a design language that is quiet yet distinctive. Together with Linie Design, we focused on distilling ideas to their essence—through repeated forms, refined textures, and a calm, thoughtful aesthetic.

The Collection
FADED NOREN
In the quiet alleys of Kyoto, noren curtains sway—worn by time, stitched by hand, and dyed with earth. They signal welcome, frame thresholds, and invite us to step inside. Faded Noren draws from this understated presence: the central divide, muted tones, and linen-like texture softened by sun and season. Each rug becomes a horizontal doorway—grounding a space while echoing movement and transition. It is an ode to impermanence, where every thread carries a whisper of gentle passage and quiet change. Hand-knotted with age-old techniques, Faded Noren blends Argentine and New Zealand wool into a richly textured, lasting piece.

WOVEN TATAMI
Inspired by the quiet order of traditional Japanese tatami, Woven Tatami translates architectural rhythm into soft, tactile wool. Lines, grids, and planes are composed with meditative precision, echoing the way tatami frames and divides space with gentle discipline. Structured yet serene, the rug balances proportion and restraint while its textured New Zealand wool adds warmth and depth. Crafted using time-honoured techniques, Woven Tatami feels both inviting and enduring—a woven reflection on structure meeting softness.

DRIFT LINE
Inspired by Japanese architecture and abstract form, Drift Line explores the quiet power of line and proportion. Each hand-knotted rug unfolds like a landscape of horizons, walls, and thresholds rendered in wool. Lines here define not just boundaries, but also balance and belonging. With natural tones of earth, sand, and soft light, the composition feels calm and open. From deliberate asymmetry, a refined rhythm emerges. Handcrafted with traditional techniques from hand-carded wool, Drift Line combines softness with unique character.

SOFT OUTLINE
Paying homage to the fabric borders of traditional Japanese tatami mats, Soft Outline celebrates contrast and quiet structure. Each rug is marked by a distinct edge—a deliberate outline inspired by the precision of Japanese interiors, where every transition in material is thoughtfully defined. Woven in neutral tones from soft beige to granite and warm stone, the collection is anchored by bold fringes or clean hems—details that function as both finish and graphic gesture, shaping the space around them. Handcrafted from pure New Zealand wool, Soft Outline offers durable softness and natural warmth that will enrich its surroundings for years to come.

TIDAL WAVES
Inspired by traditional Japanese wave illustrations, Tidal Waves translates motion into threads, tension, and texture. It captures not the wave’s crash, but the quiet moment just after. Gentle ripples move across the surface like wind on water—restrained and deliberate, controlled yet never rigid. A natural palette of sand, stone, and seafoam grounds the design in earthy calm. This is a minimalist reflection on movement, memory, and the sea—as if water left its trace not on paper but in wool. Handcrafted from soft New Zealand wool, Tidal Waves offers enduring warmth and a serene presence in any room.

STILL HORIZON
Still Horizon is a hand-knotted meditation in wool, rooted in Japanese minimalism and abstract art. Drawing on wabi-sabi imperfection and serenity, each rug becomes a canvas where subtle textures and calm, grounded tones invite reflection. The knotting is a quiet ritual—slow, intentional, and meticulous—using ancient techniques to combine hand-carded wool and linen for a soft, enduring presence. Stillness, nature’s rhythms, and deliberate artistry define every piece.
