The artistry of upholstery for Joseph reveals Wittmann’s masterful craftsmanship.

Known for its handcrafted excellence and timeless design ethos, Wiittmann, the Austrian brand introduces JOSEPH, a masterfully constructed armchair by French designer Philippe Nigro — his first collaboration with Wittmann.

Drawing inspiration from Josef Hoffmann and the refined geometry of Viennese Art Nouveau, JOSEPH captures the spirit of modern craftsmanship. Its defining feature — a quilted, grid-patterned exterior contrasted by a smooth, softly contoured seat — demands exceptional precision. As Alice Wittmann, Head of Product and Design, explains, “Even the smallest inaccuracy would be visible. Every millimetre counts.”

Each JOSEPH is handcrafted in Wittmann’s own manufactory. The armchair’s frame combines wood with a subtly curved metal backrest, shaped in the brand’s metal workshop. Its base achieves graceful curvature through expertly tensioned straps, ensuring both comfort and structure.

Comfort remains central to Wittmann’s philosophy. Within the upholstery lies a pocket spring core and a meticulously layered polyurethane foam structure, ensuring the perfect balance between support and softness. The quilted shell — whether in leather or fabric combinations — is a true test of craftsmanship, fitted with exacting precision by seasoned upholsterers. Each completed piece bears a golden Wittmann plaque, personally signed by its maker.

Versatile and elegant, JOSEPH blurs the line between armchair and dining chair, effortlessly adapting from refined living spaces to sophisticated work environments. Available with concealed or visible castors, it embodies Wittmann’s enduring commitment to beauty, comfort, and the art of making things by hand.
