A dynamic application of colour, texture and materiality

Greg Natale, the award-winning Australian designer tailors his signature layered approach to fit the brief of this modern three-story residence in Hunters Hill, Sydney. Drawn in by the generous proportions and panoramic views of Sydney’s harbour, the new owners of this corner block residence in Hunters Hill approached Greg to create an interior that complemented the original sleek charcoal façade.

The brief was modern apartment-style living: open-plan spaces, neutral colours and natural light. After performing a full-scale gutting to open up the home, Greg installed black marble flooring and a custom spiralled staircase to connect all three levels in a contemporary manner. Floor-to-ceiling windows and glass doors flood the space with light, creating an organic indoor-outdoor flow that leads the eye toward the impressive view.

On the top floor, an open-plan kitchen, living and dining area honours the owner’s request for modern apartment-style living. Pendant lights, custom rugs and feature artworks are intentionally placed to anchor the contemporary furniture, delineating between each intimate living space.

Indoor-outdoor flow is established through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, which creates an organic sense of movement between spaces that leads the eye to the spectacular view of the Sydney city skyline. A secluded enclave built around existing natural rock becomes a private outdoor lounge, with a custom glass screen featuring the signature Astoria pattern separating the pristine pool from the main entrance’s sandstone steps.

The owners were big on detail and requested layers of warmth and personality, specifically timber accents and pops of purple tones. Through a dynamic application of colour, texture and materiality, Greg infused this home with personal touches and intimate detailing without detracting from its refined modern charm.
